Golden State Freeway - Santa Ana Freeway

Interstate 5 follows the Golden State Freeway south from the Grapevine into the San Fernadino Valley and the Santa Ana Freeway from downtown southeast to Orange County and Interstate 405.

Santa Monica Freeway / San Bernardino Freeway

Interstate 10 follows the Santa Monica Freeway from its beginning at California 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) east to downtown Los Angeles and the San Bernardino Freeway east to San Bernardino.

Interstate 15

Ontario Freeway - Corona Freeway - Temecula Valley Freeway

Interstate 15 replaced U.S. 395 from Hesperia southward to San Diego. The busy highway is part of the Los Angeles to Las Vegas corridor, providing a direct route to southern Nevada from Interstate 10 (San Benardino Freeway) and California 60 (Pomona Freeway). Interstate 15 continues as a heavily traveled route through Ontaro, Coronoa, and Lake Elsinore en route to San Diego County.

Glen Anderson Freeway

Interstate 105 travels the Glen Anderson Freeway from Los Angeles International Airport east to Interstate 605.

Interstate 405

San Diego Freeway

With the distinction of the busiest freeway in the United States, Interstate 405 provides a bypass route through west Los Angeles, Inglewood, Carson, and Orange County. The San Diego Freeway was to be the preferred through route between the San Fernando Valley and San Diego, but the rapid population growth of the Los Angeles basin overwhelmed the freeway and Interstate 405 now carries over 300,000 vehicles a day through sections between Interstate 105 and U.S. 101 (Ventura Freeway).

Interstate 605

San Gabriel Freeway

The San Gabriel Freeway travels northeast from Interstate 405 (San Diego Freeway) near Long Beach to Interstate 210 (Foothill Freeway) near Pasadena. It's orientation was to provide an eastern bypass route for Los Angeles, but population growth relegates the route to commuting interests with very high traffic counts. The freeway was to split into two prongs at the north end with connections to Interstate 210.

Interstate 110

Harbor Freeway

Formerly signed as California 11, Interstate 110 is one of two north-south freeways linking downtown Los Angeles with the ports of San Pedro and Long Beach. The freeway, like most others in Los Angeles, is well traveled with an elevated HOV-3 roadway toward the junction with Interstate 10 (Santa Monica Freeway).

Interstate 210

Foothill Freeway

Providing a northern bypass of Los Angeles and preferred trucking route, Interstate 210 straddles the southern edge of the San Gabriel Mountains through the San Fernando Valley. The freeway originally began at the Kellogg Interchange with California 57, California 71, and Interstate 10 (San Bernardino Freeway). However extension of the Interstate east to San Bernardio is underway with an estimated completion date of 2007. At that time Interstate 210 will overtake the California 30 and California 210 freeways west from San Bernardino to Pasadena. Old Interstate 210 between California 210 and the Kellogg Interchange is now apart of an extended California 57 freeway.

Interstate 710

Long Beach Freeway

Interstate 710 replaced California 7 in 1981 to join Interstate 110 (former California 11) as new Interstate highways in the Los Angeles Basin. The highway is part of High Priority Corridor 46.

Barstow Freeway - Escondido Freeway

Interstate 215, formerly U.S. 395 and Interstate 15E, travels through downtown San Bernardino, Colton, Riverside, and Perris east of Interstate 15 at the Inland Empire.

U.S. Highway 101

Hollywood Freeway - Ventura Freeway

U.S. 101 represents the only federal highway remaining in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The demise of U.S. 6, 60, 66, 70, 91, 99, and 395 leaves U.S. 101 as the only route in place. Following the Hollywood Freeway north through the "Downtown Slot", U.S. 101 provides a major artery between the central business district to the Ventura Freeway. U.S. 101 turns west onto the Ventura Freeway toward Ventura, Oxnard, and Santa Barbara along the Pacific Coast. California 170 carries the Hollywood Freeway north to Interstate 5 (Golden State Freeway). California 134 continues the Ventura Freeway east to Interstate 5 and Interstate 201 (Foothill Freeway).

Glendale Freeway

The Glendale Freeway carries the California 2 designation north from the downtown area of Los Angeles to Interstate 210 (Foothill Freeway).

Garden Grove Freeway

California 22 follows the Garden Grove Freeway from the Interstate 405 & 605 junction east to California 55.

Thousand Oaks Freeway

California 23 turns the Ronald Reagen Freeway (California 118) southward to meet U.S. 101 (Ventura Freeway) at Thousand Oaks.

Terminal Island Freeway

The Terminal Island Freeway provides a short connection between the Vincent Thomas Bridge area at the Ports of Long Beach northward toward Interstate 405 (San Diego Freeway). California 47 is part of a longer unconstructed freeway leading north to downtown Los Angeles..

Costa Mesa Freeway

California 55 provides a direct route between Interstate 5 (Santa Ana Freeway) northward to California 91 (Artesia Freeway).

Orange Freeway

California 57 provides a more useful bypass route to the east of Los Angeles for through traffic in conjunction with Interstate 210 (Foothill Freeway) in lieu of Interstate 5. A briefly overlap occurs with California 60 (Pomona Freeway) however causing a choke point along the route.

Pomona Freeway - Moreno Valley Freeway

The former routing of U.S. 60, California 60 follows the Pomona Freeway east from Interstates 5 & 10 at downtown Los Angeles to Interstate 15 at Corona. The highway continues as a freeway through the San Bernardino area to Interstate 10.

Corona Freeway

California 71 currently exists as both a freeway and expressway between its end points at the Kellogg Interchange and California 91 (Artesia Freeway). Upgrading to a full freeway is underway.

San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor

Another in the series of Orange County toll roads, California 73 provides a bypass route of Irvine for Interstate 5 between San Juan Capistrano and Costa Mesa. The northernmost portion of the highway was built as a freeway between California 55 (Costa Mesa Freeway) and Interstate 405 (San Diego Freeway).

Marina Freeway - Richard Nixon Parkway

California 90 exists in two segments, the short Marina Freeway in west Los Angeles, and the north-south controlled-access Richard Nixon Parkway. The gap between the two highways is unconstructed California 90.

Gardena Freeway - Artesia Freeway - Riverside Freeway

A major east-west freeway through south Los Angeles County and north Orange County, the Artesia Freeway carries the designation of California 91 east from Interstate 110 to Interstate 15. California 91 replaced the routing of U.S. 91 in 1961.

Pasadena Freeway

California 110 continues the Interstate 110 (Harbor Freeway) north of Interstate 10 (Santa Monica Freeway) as the Pasadena Freeway. The substandard and historical nature of the freeway relegates the highway as a state highway. California 110 peters out at at Arroyo Parkway in South Pasadena.

Simi Valley Freeway - Ronald Reagen Freeway

California 118 stems west from Interstate 210 (San Fernadino Freeway) in the San Fernardino Valley into the Simi Valley northwest of Los Angeles.

Laguna Freeway - Eastern Transportation Corridor

California 133 exists as two highways at present. The southern portion follows a two-lane roadway between Laguna Beach and Interstate 405 (San Diego Freeway). Upgrading of the highway to a freeway is underway between California 73 (San Joauin Hills Transportation Corridor) and the San Diego Freeway at Irvine. A tolled freeway carries California 133 north from Interstate 5 to California 241 (Foothills Corridor).

Ventura Freeway

California 134 continues the Ventura Freeway east from U.S. 101 & California 170 (Hollywood Freeway) to Interstate 210 (Foothill Freeway).

Hollywood Freeway

The Hollywood Freeway continues north of U.S. 101 & California 134 (Ventura Freeway) as California 170 to Interstate 5 (Golden State Freeway).

Foothill Coridor

California 241 serves the growing eastern suburbs of Orange County through Rancho Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, and Irvine. The toll road skims the western reaches of Santa Ana Mountains between Oso Parkway and California 261 (Eastern Transportation Corridor) at present. A southern extension to Interstate 5 at San Clemente is planned by 2008.
