Interstate 280/Junipero Serra Freeway south
	The interchange with Exit 49 (John Daly Boulevard and Junipero Serra Boulevard to Daly City) also includes the merge of California 1 south onto Interstate 280 south. A mileage sign is provided for the distance to South San Francisco and the control city of San Jose. At this point, Interstate 280 enters Daly City, the "Gateway to the Peninsula." Named for John Daly (prominent land owner at the time of the City's early development), the population was 103,621 as of the 2000 Census. The city was incorporated on March 18, 1911. 	Southbound Interstate 280 and California 1 split at Exit 47B. California 1/Cabrillo Highway follows the coastal route from Pacifica to Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, and Monterey. Portions of California 1 are freeway, but most of the route is two lanes and is the slower scenic highway. 	While most of California 35 remains away from freeway alignments, it has a brief overlap with Interstate 280 that is unlike the rest of the state highway. California 35 tends to remain in rural and scenic areas along Skyline Boulevard from San Francisco south to Patchen Pass (Junction California 17). As for California 92, this major east-west state highway is the most direct and fastest route to Half Moon Bay and the San Mateo County coast.
