Interstate 215

Interstate 215 is old U.S. 395 between Interstate 15 in Temecula and Devore via Perris, Sun City, Riverside, and San Bernardino. The section of Interstate 215 between Interstate 15 and California 60 was upgraded to Interstate standards in the late 1980s; for a time prior to this upgrade, the route was signed as California 215 southbound and TO Interstate 215 northbound. Interstate 215 at the interchange with California 60 and California 91 is slated for major improvements, including the installation of flyover ramps to ease the traffic issues that stem from an overwhelmed cloverleaf interchange. North of Interstate 10, Interstate 215 is slated for reconstruction through San Bernardino.

Interstate 215 North
	Interstate 215 begins its northerly journey at Murrieta Hot Springs. Upon splitting from Interstate 15, the freeway passes through some largely agricultural areas between Temecula and Moreno Valley, following Old U.S. 395 the whole way. This first mileage sign provides the distance to the first three exits on northbound: Exit 1, Murrieta Hot Springs; Exit 2, Los Alamos Road; and Exit 4, Clinton Keith Road. Photo taken 03/20/04.

	Northbound Interstate 215 reaches Exit 15, Junction California 74 east. Use California 74 east to the burgeoning city of Hemet and California 79 north to Beaumont. East of Hemet and Valle Vista, California 74 again ascends, this time into the San Jacinto Mountains and into the San Bernardino National Forest. 	Northbound Interstate 215 at Exit 29, Junction California 60. While much of the freeway between Interstate 15 and California 60 was completed by the late 1980s and early 1990s, the California 60 freeway and the remainder of Interstate 215 northbound is of a much older vintage. The freeway also gains significantly higher traffic counts, both due to California 60 and eventually California 91, which brings traffic from Orange County. 	Business California 60 follows the old alignment of U.S. 60 through downtown Riverside. While U.S. 70-99 roughly followed Interstate 10 through San Bernardino to the north, U.S. 60 strayed south to pass through Riverside. California 60 approximates the route of U.S. 60, but westbound U.S. 60 rejoined U.S. 70-99 at Pomona, while California 60 does not rejoin Interstate 10 until reaching downtown Los Angeles. 	One of the most under-powered interchanges in the Inland Empire is the nexus between California 60, California 91, and Interstate 215. A cloverleaf, this interchange is the cause of numerous delays in all directions. There are plans to install flyover ramps, but no visible construction was underway as of early 2004. 	The far right lane takes Northbound Interstate 215; the #4 lane is exit only for California 91; and the remaining three lanes carry through traffic for California 60 west. This interchange is one reason why California 60 is not a good alternative to Interstate 10 and why Interstate 215 is not a good alternative to Interstate 15. 	The next exit along northbound is Exits 40A-B, Junction Interstate 10. As the primary east-west freeway from the desert to the Inland Empire and Los Angeles Basin, Interstate 10 is frequently congested. California 210 acts as an alternate route to avoid troublesome commutes and delays on weekends. 	Historically, U.S. 66 followed a couple of different routes through San Bernardino. The historic route markers are generally posted on Cajon Boulevard and Mount Vernon Avenue, implying that U.S. 66 did not as far east as Interstate 215. Photo taken 03/20/04.

California 206 was decommissioned in the late 1990s, and unfortunately it was not reestablished as Business Loop I-215.
