California 284 leads north from California 70 at Chilcoot to Frenchman Lake. The highway slowly ascends from the town into the Plumas National Forest and the Frenchman Reservoir State Recreation Area.
California 284 north
Begin Northbound California 284 in Chilcoot. This route starts out straight, but quickly becomes windy and narrow, as warned in this sign. There isn't much snow here in town, but there is snow in the mountains surrounding the reservoir. Photo taken 01/20/03.
There are only two shields on the mainline of California 284: one at the north end along southbound and another at the south end along northbound. This shield is located along northbound as the highway heads out of Chilcoot. Photo taken 01/20/03.
End Northbound California 284 at Frenchman Lake. The highway transitions into Forest Service Route 11. Note all the snow, which shows the elevation gain between the town and the lake. Photo taken 01/20/03.
California 284 south
Begin Southbound California 284 at Frenchman Lake. Photo taken 01/20/03.
