California 246

California 246 is a two-lane, east-west highway starting at the western city limits of Lompoc (not Surf, as erroneously shown on some maps) and continuing east to California 154 near Santa Ynez via Solvang, a popular Santa Barbara County tourist destination. The highway roughly parallels the Santa Ynez River throughout.

| Westbound California 246 ends at the Lompoc city limits. California 246 was planned to extend all the way to Surf, as suggested by this mileage sign, which ends at Milepost 8.30. However, such an extension will not happen, especially since there is not much in Surf (other than an Amtrak station) that requires a state highway. The county route that continues west from this point provides sufficient access to the coastline. Photo taken 06/01/02.

| Westbound California 246 and Northbound California 1 split at this point in Lompoc, with California 1 continuing along the Pacific Coast toward Vandenberg Air Force Base and Santa Maria. California 246 is shown to continue west to Surf and a gate to the NASA installation, but the state highway ends before reaching either destination. Photo taken 06/01/02.

| Westbound California 246 and Northbound California 1 approaching the California 1 northern split in downtown Lompoc. Somewhat surprisingly, California 246 continues as a state route through the city of Lompoc, then ends once it meets the city limits. This is contrary to many urban state routes that are being decommissioned in other parts of California. Photo taken 06/01/02.
