California 244 is a very short route that connects Interstate 80 and Business Loop I-80 (Capital City Freeway/Hidden California 51) with Historic U.S. 40/Auburn Avenue. Basically a long exit/entrance ramp, California 244 was intended to be a much longer route, which would connect to unconstructed California 143. Although California 244 is still on the books as a future freeway corridor, the route is unlikely to be constructed anytime soon.
California 244 west
California 244 begins at a traffic light with Auburn Boulevard. The freeway is only about a half-mile long, and almost as soon as you take the turn from Auburn Boulevard, signs announce the upcoming junction with Business Loop I-80 and Interstate 80. Notably, this advance sign does not incorporate a Business Loop shield and does not mention that this exit also leads to Sacramento. Photo taken 01/20/03.
