California 103

The route of California 103 is linked to the route of California 47. California 47 heads north along the Terminal Island Freeway. At the Anaheim Street/Henry Ford Avenue exit, California 47 exits the Terminal Island Freeway, and California 103 continues north along the freeway past California 1 until ending at Willow Street. Between Ocean Boulevard and Willow Street, spotty signage is posted for California 103, including some signs at the southern terminus of the Terminal Island Freeway and Interstate 710; however, California 103 does not officially begin until just north of the Heim Bridge.

California 103 north
North of the Heim bridge, California 47 is diverted onto Henry Ford Avenue. California 47 is planned for an extension due north from this point as the Industrial Freeway, but it has not been constructed. However, California 47 is signed along Alameda Avenue north of here as a result of the Alameda Corridor project. Meanwhile, the Terminal Island Freeway continues north as California 103. A begin California 103 shield is located at this spot, as the freeway turns northeast. California 103 continues as a freeway until it terminates prematurely at Willow Street. It is proposed to extend California 103 to connect to Interstates 405 and 710, but that connection has not yet been constructed. It is unclear if/when that extension will be completed. After the lift bridge, the freeway is solely signed as northbound California 103. The next exit is Junction California 1, Pacific Coast Highway. Between Torrance and Long Beach, California 1 runs east-west, thus allowing for this interchange between the north-south freeway and the coast highway. Photo taken 07/21/01.
View of northbound California 103 after the California 1/Pacific Coast Highway interchange. This four-lane freeway is underutilized and does not carry much traffic. According to Daniel Faigin's site, California 103 ends at its interchange with California 1, and the rest of the freeway is not a state highway. For our purposes, we will continue to describe it as California 103 all the way to Willow Street. Photo taken 03/30/03.
End freeway ahead signage along northbound California 103. California 103 was originally intended to continue northeast to meet Interstate 405 and Interstate 710 at their current interchange; that plan is still on the books but remains unconstructed. Photo taken 03/30/03.
Northbound California 103 approaching its end at Sepulveda Boulevard. The northbound Interstate 710 detour makes a left here to reach Interstate 405/San Diego Freeway. Photo taken 03/30/03.
End northbound California 103 at Sepulveda Boulevard. It is possible that this freeway may be extended north to meet Interstate 405 and Interstate 710. Photo taken 03/30/03.
