| Northbound California 99 approaching Exit 286, Junction Sacramento County Route E-12/Elk Grove Boulevard, one mile. As the name implies, this exit serves the town of Elk Grove. Photo taken 08/22/03.

| Northbound California 99 at Exit 286, Junction Sacramento County Route E-12/Elk Grove Boulevard. Sacramento County Route E-12 starts at its junction with Interstate 5 just west of here, and it connects with Sacramento County Route E-2/Grant Line Road east of Elk Grove. Regional travelers may notice that a separate segment of Grant Line Road several miles southwest of here has an exit along Interstate 205. Photo taken 08/22/03.

| Northbound California 99 at Exit 289, Consumnes River Boulevard and Calvine Road. Despite the name, Consumnes River Boulevard does not parallel the Consumnes River, but it does meet Consumnes River College. Photo taken 08/22/03.

| Stockton Boulevard is the original alignment of U.S. 50-99 before the current freeway was constructed. It was signed as a business route until both U.S. routes were decommissioned in favor of the California 99 freeway. The next exit (Exit 291) is for Stockton Boulevard and Mack Road. Photo taken 08/22/03.

| Northbound California 99 at Exit 293A, Florin Road East. The next exit is Exit 293B, Florin Road West. Taking Florin Road east connects with California 16 en route to the foothills; westbound Florin Road connects with Interstate 5 at Exit 513. Photo taken 08/22/03.

| Northbound California 99 at Exit 293B, Florin Road West, followed by Exits 294A-B, 47th Avenue (one mile). The northbound lanes feature a cloverleaf-style interchange connection. Photo taken 08/22/03.

| Northbound California 99 at Exit 295, Fruitridge Road East and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. Fruitridge runs east-west between Interstate 5 Exit 515 and Watt Avenue near a junction with California 16 (use Exit 296 for westbound). Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard runs north-south, with southbound connections to Franklin Boulevard (Sacramento County Route J-8) and northbound connections into the eastern side of downtown Sacramento. Photo taken 08/22/03.

| Mileage sign along northbound California 99 approaching Exit 297, 12th Avenue (one-half mile) and Junction Business Loop I-80/U.S. 50/Hidden Interstate 305). The end of the line for the southern segment of California 99 is rapidly approaching. Photo taken 08/22/03.
| From here, the signage along northbound gets to be very rapid. First, all traffic for the airport is advised to use Interstate 80. This sign is wrong; it should use a Business Loop I-80 (or U.S. 50) shield and direct traffic to take Business Loop I-80 west to Interstate 5 north. Or... if the signage in this area were better, it could say that motorists may simply continue following the signs for California 99. But since the joint signage for California 99 has been eliminated between Business Loop I-80 and the Airport, that is no longer an option. Photo taken 08/22/03.

| Despite our best efforts, the semi-truck obscured most of this sign assembly. The sign that is not visible indicates that the left lanes will transition onto eastbound Business Loop I-80 to Reno. The right lanes transition onto eastbound U.S. 50 or Business Loop I-80 westbound (shown as "TO Interstate 80" for some reason). No mention is made of where California 99 goes. Photo taken 08/22/03.
| This is the only sign that tells motorists to use northbound Interstate 5 to find the continuation of northbound California 99 north of the city. In addition, there is an exit for Broadway hidden in the middle of the upcoming interchange (Exit 298B). Photo taken 08/22/03.
| Now clear of the trucks, this sign assembly along northbound indicates that the right three lanes exit onto westbound Business Loop I-80 (and California 99, U.S. 50, and Interstate 305) and eastbound U.S. 50, while the left four lanes continue straight ahead onto eastbound Business Loop I-80 (and California 51). Photo taken 08/22/03.
| Exit 298A actually carries California 99 off itself, while the mainlanes continue onward to the two remaining exits along this stretch of California 99: Exit 298B (Broadway) and Exit 298C (Jct. Business Loop I-80/California 51). Photo taken 08/22/03.
| After California 99 silently merges onto westbound U.S. 50 (and Business Loop I-80/Interstate 305), there is a short stretch of freeway that is technically part of State Route 99 but is really a transition ramp from northbound California 99 onto northbound California 51 (Business Loop I-80). The transition is long enough to have its own exit: Exit 298B, which carries the mileage of California 99. This exit is Broadway. After the Broadway exit, the remaining traffic on the transition ramp is considered to be on Exit 298C, which connects onto northbound California 51 (see next photobox). Photo taken 08/22/03.
| The final exit along this stretch of California 99 takes the three left lanes and becomes California 51 (Business Loop I-80). Photo taken 08/22/03.
| There is a gap in California 99 between downtown Sacramento and the airport; California 99 resumes just north of the Arco Arena exit. Once on the transition ramp from northbound Interstate 5 onto northbound California 99, the first exit sign is for Exit 307, Elkhorn Boulevard. After Exit 307, California 99 becomes an expressway, with signed intersections, until Exit 319, which is the California 70 split. Photo taken 01/20/03.
