California 99 (Southbound)

Southbound California 99
Southbound California 99 approaching Exit 386, East First Avenue, one mile. Photo taken 01/20/03.
East First Avenue is the most direct route from the freeway into downtown, as evidenced by this sign. Taking East First Avenue west to Warner Street south will lead to the California State University at Chico. First Avenue also intersects with Business California 99 (The Esplanade) north of downtown Chico. Photo taken 01/20/03.

There is a gap between the Sacramento International Airport and downtown Sacramento; then California 99 reemerges as a busy freeway leading toward Lodi and Stockton. This photo shows southbound California 99 at Exit 255, Junction California 88. California 88 leads east as an all-weather route over the Sierra Nevada Mountains via Carson Pass. Merced County Route J-59 continues north of Snelling as La Grange Road, which meets California 108-120 north of Don Pedro Reservoir. First photo taken by Pete Sison, 03/07/01; second photo taken 05/02.

Exit 27 leads to the business loop for Bakersfield, which remains parted from the freeway all the way to Exit 11 (Union Avenue). The business route follows old U.S. 99 (and U.S. 466 for the northern section), and it is well worth the drive due to the old expressway and older standards still in use on that road. Photo taken 01/21/04.
Southbound California 99 approaching Exit 27, Junction California 204 and Business California 99 (Golden State Avenue) in Bakersfield. Originally, California 99 was designated the Golden State Freeway. Although it is not apparent in this photo, California 204/Business California 99 head south as a freeway, changing into a surface street just north of downtown. The business route connects to California 178, making it a viable option to reach that highway rather than using Exit 26. Photo taken 01/21/04.

As southbound traffic approaches the southern end of California 99 and reach the merge with Interstate 5, auto traffic takes the main lanes, while trucks and busses should take the right lanes to allow slower and larger traffic to merge separately. The overpass shown here is the transition ramp carrying northbound Interstate 5. Photo taken 05/26/03 by Pete Sison.
