| Eastbound California 91/Riverside Freeway at Exit 40, Junction California 241/Foothill Toll Corridor south to Irvine and Ladera Ranch. Ultimately, California 241 is planned for extension south to Interstate 5 south of San Clemente, thus providing an alternate route into San Diego County. Photo taken 04/18/04.

| In this photo, eastbound California 91 approaches what was once Exit 42, Coal Canyon Road. This exit was eliminated in 2003 in order to promote an environmental corridor in Coal Canyon. As a result, this mileage sign was removed from the freeway. The next exits are Exit 44, Green River Drive and Exit 45, Junction California 71/Chino Hills Freeway (shown as an expressway here, California 71 is now a full freeway). Photo taken 09/16/00.

| Eastbound California 91/Riverside Freeway at Exit 44, Green River Road. The 91 Express Lanes come to their end here, and the freeway exits Orange County and enters Riverside County. A carpool lane emerges (see photobox below) to replace the express lanes. Photo taken 04/18/04.
| The next exit along eastbound is Exit 45, Junction California 71/Chino Hills Freeway north, one mile. This interchange marks the southern terminus of California 71. Prior to the completion of Interstate 15, California 71 continued east cosigned with California 91, then turned south along Interstate 15 all the way to Temecula. California 71 then followed California 79 and California 371 southeast to end at California 74 in the mountains west of Palm Springs. All of the duplication created by this odd routing was eliminated by the mid-1980s, and now California 71 has a much shorter almost all-freeway route. Photo taken 04/18/04.
| This unusual carpool lane advisory sign is white on black, while most of these signs are black on white. Unlike the earlier 91 Express Lanes, this carpool lane is more normal, as two people in car constitute a carpool. Photo taken 04/18/04.
| California 71, which used to be a much longer route, is today preserved as a southeast to northwest diagonal freeway, originating here at California 91 Exit 45 and continuing through Chino, Chino Hills, and Pomona until ending at the Interstate 10/Interstate 210/California 57 Kellogg Interchange. While most of the route is freeway, a portion remains an expressway ... and lengthy delays often result. Photo taken 04/18/04.
| Eastbound California 91/Riverside Freeway at Exit 45, Junction California 71/Chino Valley Freeway north. Originally a two-lane highway, California 71 was converted to a full freeway from California 91 north to California 60 by late 2003. The section of California 71 between California 60 and Interstate 10 is slated for upgrade from expressway to freeway, but construction has not yet begun. California 71 comes to its northern terminus at California 57/Interstate 210 northwest of Pomona. Photo taken 04/18/04.

| Interstate 15, which follows old California 31 between California 91 and Interstate 215, is a major through route north toward the high desert communities of San Bernardino County. The freeway was completed through the 1970s and 1980s, and today it carries a great deal of traffic en route to Barstow and Las Vegas to the north and San Diego to the south. Photo taken 04/18/04.

California 91 continues northeast to serve the city of Riverside, founded in 1870 and home to 259,738 people, grew in population by 14.7% between 1990 and 2000. Home to the historic Mission Inn, Riverside has a scenic downtown. |
| The next exit along westbound California 91 is Exit 45, Junction California 71, one and one-quarter miles. In history, California 71 used to have a significantly longer route. Beginning at the Santa Rosa Indian Reservation west of Palm Springs along California 74, California 71 used to follow California 371 west to Aguanga, then California 79 west to Temecula. From Temecula, California 71 took the corridor of Interstate 15 north to Corona and then California 91 west to this exit. With the completion of Interstate 15 and the creation of California 371, California 71 was truncated to include only the route from here north to California 57. Photo taken 05/01/02.
| California 71 is a diagonal freeway that begins here in Corona, then heads northwest through Chino and Chino Hills into Pomona. Upon reaching Pomona, California 71 downgrades to an expressway, and it intersects several city streets, including Mission Boulevard and Holt Avenue before again becoming a freeway for its final mile to the Kellogg Interchange (Junction Interstate 10 and California 57/former Interstate 210). Plans call for the California 71 expressway in Pomona to be upgraded to freeway standards; sufficient rights of way exist for such an upgrade. Shown on some maps as the Corona Freeway, California 71 is generally known as the Chino Hills Freeway. Photo taken 05/01/02.
| California 71 is currently under construction for expansion to full freeway standards between California 91 and Interstate 210, and this reminds motorists of restrictions along the highway as a result of the construction. By 2004, this expansion project was complete. Photo taken 05/01/02.
| Westbound California 91 at Exit 45, Junction California 71, the Chino Hills (aka Corona) Freeway. At the time this photo was taken, the highway began as a Super Two freeway, then changed into a full freeway north of California 83. As of March 2004, California 71 has at least four lanes all the way south to California 91. The next interchange along westbound is Exit 44, Green River Road, followed by Exits 41B-A, Junction California 241/Foothill Corridor south and Gypsum Canyon Road. Midway between Exit 45 and Exit 41B, California 91 departs Riverside County and enters Orange County. The Carpool/High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes become separated from the main lanes and become "High Occupancy or Toll" (HOT) lanes that allow single occupancy vehicles with Fastrak to use the express lanes. Carpools may use the express lanes for free. There is no cash toll allowed, so those solo vehicles without Fastrak may not use the lanes. Known as the "91 Express Lanes," these separated lanes extend from the county line west to California 55. Photo taken 05/01/02.
| After the Green River Road interchange (Exit 44), the former Coal Canyon Road interchange at Milepost 42 has been eliminated in order to create a wildlife undercrossing. This exit was not well-used prior to its closure, so the impact to the freeway is fairly minimal. The following exit along westbound California 91 is Exit 41B, Junction California 241/Foothill Corridor Toll Road south. Signs in the next couple of miles delineate which lanes go toward California 241 and California 91. Photo taken 07/17/04.
| On this day, the toll for the 91 Express Lanes is $2.45. The toll varies based on the congestion of the through lanes. The toll lanes remain physically separated from the rest of the freeway. Photo taken 07/17/04.
| Part of the Orange County Toll Road system, California 241/Foothill Corridor Toll Road is one of several corridors managed by that organization. California 241 is a such a successful toll road that it is already being expanded from four lanes to six lanes in some sections. The toll road has not yet been extended its ultimate southern terminus. Photo taken 07/17/04.
| Westbound California 91 approaches Exit 41B, Junction California 241/Foothill Corridor Toll Road south to Rancho Santa Margarita and Ladera Ranch. Ultimately, California 241 will be extended as a toll road as far south as Interstate 5 near San Onofre, offering an eventual bypass route for through traffic to San Diego County. Photo taken 07/17/04.

| Immediately after the California 241 exit ramp, California 91 next meets Gypsum Canyon Road at Exit 41A. Prior to the construction of California 241, this used to be a lonely exit along fast-paced California 91. Now the exit resides in the shadow of the massive toll road interchange. | Westbound California 91 at Exit 15A, California 19 (Lakewood Boulevard). California 19/Lakewood Boulevard begins at a traffic circle in Long Beach, then leads north to end at Interstate 210 near Sierra Madre and Pasadena. Nearly the entire route is multi-lane divided, but it is very congested as it passes through various suburbs east of Los Angeles. Photo taken 06/02/02.

| There are two separate signs along westbound that state "Interstate 710, three-quarters of a mile." This is the first one. Photo taken 02/15/04.
| And this the second one. Interstate 710 is the Long Beach Freeway, which leads south to Long Beach and north to Alhambra/Monterey Park, just shy of Pasadena. The section of the freeway that is supposed to connect Interstate 10 with Pasadena is quite controversial, but it is still planned for construction someday. Photo taken 02/15/04.

| Westbound California 91 reaches Main Street and next approaches junction Interstate 110/Harbor Freeway (Exit 6). For some reason, California 91 west is signed as "Thru Traffic" here, even though through traffic would be better advised to take Interstate 110 to reach Interstate 405, which is presumably the next destination of through traffic, unless they plan to really go through the cities Gardena and Torrance to reach Interstate 405. Photo taken 05/30/04.
| The next interchange along westbound California 91 is Exit 6, Junction Interstate 110/Harbor Freeway. For whatever reason, a California 91 shield is omitted on the End Freeway sign, since the state route continues west from here to Manhattan Beach.
