California 72 is Whittier Boulevard, the original routing of U.S. 101 southeast of Los Angeles before the Interstate 5/Santa Ana Freeway was built. California 72 begins in Pico Rivera at Junction California 19, and heads southeast to end near its junction with California 39 in La Habra. A few remnant California 72 shields exist west of Pico Rivera, but that stretch of Whittier Boulevard is not maintained by the state. The entire route is a good example of an older-style California expressway.
