California 58 - San Bernardino County west

Photo Journey

The guide to California 58 is divided into eastbound and westbound directions by county as follows:

California 58 West
This sign, located on the transition ramp from northbound Interstate 15 to westbound California 58, indicates that the first exit is Exit 233, Main Street (old U.S. 66-91), one mile. Photo taken 01/20/04.
After the traffic from southbound Interstate 15 (and by extension westbound Interstate 40) merges onto the nascent freeway, the right lane is defaulted as an exit ramp to Exit 233, Main Street/Old U.S. 66-91. Photo taken 01/20/04.
Westbound California 58 at Exit 233, Main Street. Main Street leads north along old U.S. 66-91 into Barstow, connecting with Business Loop I-15. Main Street leads south as the National Trails Highway, which is old U.S. 66-91 en route to Victorville. Photo taken 01/20/04.
The California 58 freeway ends two miles east of the Old U.S. 66-91 exit, at Lenwood Road. Photo taken 01/20/04.
Westbound California 58 approaching Exit 231, Lenwood Road, one-half mile. Photo taken 01/20/04.
Sunset over the Mojave along westbound California 58 just east of Kramer Junction. California 58 will narrow to two lanes before reaching its next major intersection: U.S. 395. Photo taken 01/20/04.
U.S. 395 leads south to Hesperia, where it is absorbed into Interstate 15 en route to San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego. Heading north, U.S. 395 leads to Ridgecrest, Owens Valley, Lone Pine, Independence (Inyo County seat), Big Pine, Bishop, Mammoth, and Reno. Photo taken 01/20/04.
Westbound California 58 at the traffic signal with U.S. 395 at Kramer Junction/Four Corners. This intersection presents a significant delay for east-west travelers, as California 58 is narrowed to only two lanes and carries freeway volumes of traffic. This area is programmed to be bypassed, but it is unclear when that bypass would be constructed. By comparison, the section of U.S. 395 from Interstate 15 north to California 14 is relatively empty, even though it carries a good amount of traffic between the Inland Empire and the Eastern Sierra. Photo taken 01/20/04.
The sun sets over the Mojave along westbound California 58 just east of Mojave. Photo taken 01/20/04.
