	After leaving the coastal Big Sur area, California 1 passes through the town of Carmel before it again becomes a freeway as it approaches the city of Monterey. Upon reaching the Monterey Peninsula, California 1 picks up eastbound California 68, and they remain duplexed for a couple miles. After the exit to Aguajito Road north, the next exit serves the downtown area of Monterey. This exit is Exit 399B, Junction Business California 1 North/Munras Avenue. Munras Avenue together with Fremont Avenue form the business loop through Monterey. The freeway carries California 1 and California 68 around the city to the east. Photo taken 05/28/03 by Pete Sison.
	As California 1 and California 68 prepare to divide, through traffic on northbound California 1 is advised to take the two left lanes. California 1 continues north along the coast to Seaside, Sand City, Marina, and Castroville. California 68, meanwhile, heads east along the Monterey-Salinas Highway to U.S. 101 in Salinas. 	The next exit along northbound California 1 and eastbound California 68 is the split between the two routes. Exit 401B provides access to east California 68 and also connects to northbound Business California 1/Fremont Avenue.
